Webmaster's note:
All these renaissance pieces were recorded by Julian Bream on a lute. While the lute did exist in Spain, it did not have a significant presence soon after the Moors were banished from the Iberian peninsula. Other instruments started taking its place such as the four-course guitar/renaissance guitar and the Spanish vihuela. Later on the Baroque guitar would emerge. The pieces on this album were most definitely written for the vihuela. Julian Bream's close association with José Romanillos (the famous guitar luthier) would eventually provide him with the opportunity to play these pieces on their intended instruments. Sadly, Julian Bream never found the time to re-record this entire album on the vihuela but he did re-record a few selected works from this album on their intended instruments for the album "¡Guitarra! The Guitar in Spain" and the BBC filmseries "¡Guitarra! A Musical Journey Through Spain".
Most of the liner notes throughout Julian Bream's career were commissioned out to notable writers/authorities of the guitar or the music being represented on the album. On occasion, Julian Bream would write his own liner notes and this album is a good example of a job well done by Mr Bream.
