The DOREMI label has made a wonderful habit of making numerous very rare recordings available on CD. Those who admire the musical interpretations of Julian Bream have benefited immensely from the three volumes made available by the label. All these recordings were once played over BBC radio stations and therefore were only heard by those who happened to be listening to the broadcast on that specific day when they were aired. Some of them may have had more than one airing, but soon they went into storage at the BBC vaults, never to be heard again. Some of the recordings were of such high quality that the BBC had them pressed to vinyl for the purpose of licensing the broadcasts to other countries so they could air them for a limited time. They were all pressed with an expiration label and the company expected that those radio stations would destroy them when they expired. Fortunately, many of these pressings wound up sitting on a shelf for decades and eventually found their way into the hands of classical music collectors. In the early days, the BBC would oftentimes take the expensive master tapes sitting in vaults and have them erased for reused. A significant number of early recordings were lost during the bulk erasings of master tapes. Had it not been for these broadcasts that found their way onto a vinyl LP, we would have lost these audio gems forever. Jack Silver is one such collector that has worked hard to enable these recordings to be heard once again. There are not many people alive today who can say that they remember hearing these earlier recordings when they were initially broadcast and so they will be new to most ears. The remastering is masterful! To hear that the guitar was so well recorded live in the 1960s, even with a thundering orchestra in the background during the more joyful parts of Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez is amazing. There are many live lute recordings throughout these discs that are equally as well recorded and make it easy to enjoy the typically quiet and delicate sounds of the instrument. The vast majority of these preserved recordings are from the annual Aldeburgh Festivals which is a high-profile festival with participating musicians generally considered to be of high calibre. Additionally, there are recordings from the Edinburgh International Festival and several BBC Studio recitals among others. Let's hope that DOREMI and Jack Silver continue to unearth and make available further vintage recordings of Julian Bream and other early classical guitarists, many of whom, at this point, have been long forgotten.
