Information on the commission
The artist, Michael Taylor, won the 1983 National Portrait Gallery - John Player Portrait Award. The two parts to this award included a £6,000 cash award and a commission to paint a well-known figure for an additional £1,000. The finished portrait was to become part of the collection at the National Portrait Gallery. Mr Taylor was given a list of distinguished individuals selected for portraiture but he made a request to paint Julian Bream instead. Julian Bream sat for the portrait throughout most of 1984 and the finished piece was unveiled at the Gallery on the 28th of November 1984.
